About the Design:

Edgar Degas returned to horses and racing throughout his career, drawn to the movement of horses and riders. In Before the Race, he captures the quieter anticipation before the action begins. Brilliant jockey silks punctuate a landscape built from layers of pastel, while the loosely arranged horses seem poised to move. Degas revisited an earlier composition for this version, intensifying its color and altering details of the scene.
