Around 1860, a young Paul Cézanne painted The Four Seasons directly on the walls of the grand salon at his family’s country home, Jas de Bouffan, near Aix-en-Provence. The four allegorical figures represent Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter. Created while Cézanne was still studying law, the murals belong to the very beginning of a career that would later help reshape modern art.
