Ernst Ludwig Kirchner settled in the Swiss Alps after arriving in Davos in 1917 and spent much of the remainder of his life there. In Davos in Winter, painted between 1924 and 1926, naturalistic color gives way to vivid blues, pinks, yellows, and greens. The exaggerated mountains and simplified village forms reflect Kirchner’s Expressionist approach, using color and shape to convey his experience of the Alpine landscape rather than reproduce it literally.
