Created around 1900 to 1920, Rudolf Reschreiter’s Hintersee und Hoher Göll presents a clear Alpine lake surrounded by rocks, evergreen forest and mountains touched by warm light. Painted in gouache, the scene combines careful observation with strong areas of blue, green and coral that emphasize the reflections across the water. Reschreiter was both an artist and an experienced mountaineer, and his familiarity with Alpine terrain gave his landscapes a convincing sense of place. The painting reflects his lifelong interest in recording mountain environments with precision, clarity and vivid color.
