The story behind The Portraiture of John Singer Sargent, from Aether’s founder, Carrie-Ann:
Years ago, during a visit to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, I encountered the work of John Singer Sargent—and I’ve been captivated ever since.
His portraits stopped me in my tracks. The elegance, the composition, the exquisite attention to detail—each one felt alive. Sargent had a way of capturing not just appearance, but presence. Though he painted across many subjects, it’s his portraits that continue to speak to me the most.
When creating this puzzle, I wanted to focus on the elements that drew me in from the very beginning: color and mood. I curated a selection of his portraits that reflect both the breadth of his talent and the beauty of his palette—soft fabrics, glinting eyes, warm light.
One piece I was especially excited to include is his portrait of Isabella Stewart Gardner. Her museum is one of my favorite places. Including her portrait in this puzzle felt like a way to honor not only Sargent’s mastery, but the legacy of a woman who helped preserve and share so much beauty with the world.
