Austrian artist Karl Wiener created Andante around 1928 using watercolor and gouache. Rather than depicting a recognizable subject, Wiener built the composition from bands of saturated color, repeated curves, and contrasting shapes. Its musical title, Andante, describes a moderate, walking tempo, which adds another way to read the image with the forms moving across the composition almost like a visual rhythm.
